Description of Silicon with associated disease summary
Silicon is one of the indicators of interstitial lung diseases
including idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIPs) and sarcoidosis. Higher
levels of silicon were detected in interstitial lung diseases patients. The
higher levels of silicon and other metallic elements (Cr and Ni) in ILD
patients may be due to their difficulties of metal removal. Structural
modification in the pulmonary interstitium reduce gaseous exchange and make
lung retain some metals such as Ni, Cr and Si for many years. (J Breath Res. (2009))

One study using inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to detect silicon and shows that the EBC silicon level in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients are significantly higher than the healthy controls (p < 0.05 versus controls) (J Breath Res. A common interstitial lung disease of unknown etiology, usually occurring between 50-70 years of age. Clinically, it is characterized by an insidious onset of
breathlessness with exertion and a nonproductive cough, leading to progressive
DYSPNEA. Pathological features show scant interstitial inflammation, patchy
collagen fibrosis, prominent fibroblast proliferation foci, and microscopic
honeycomb change.
