Uric acid

Description

Description of uric acid with associated disease summary

Urates is a strong reducing agent which can binds prooxidant metals such as iron and copper and prevent them involved in reactions with hydrogen peroxide which can produce hydroxyl radical. In addition, urates can reacts with reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibits lipid peroxidation. Increase plasma urate concentration may be linked to oxidative stress (Biochem Med (Zagreb). (2011)). EBC urates can be detected using enzymatic color test with uricase. Both the EBC and serum urates in Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) children is significantly higher than the healthy control (Biochem Med (Zagreb). (2011)). However, the exact anatomical site produce urates remains unknown and further investigations should be done to link between urates and other biomarkers of oxidative stress (Biochem Med (Zagreb). (2011)). Description of disease(s) related to urates:

Disease summary

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

EBC urates can be detected using enzymatic color test with uricase. Both the EBC and serum urates in OSA children is significantly higher than the healthy control (Biochem Med (Zagreb). (2011)).

Obstructive Sleep Apnea MeSH: Sleep Apnea, Obstructive
A disorder characterized by recurrent apneas during sleep despite persistent respiratory efforts. It is due to upper airway obstruction. The respiratory pauses may induce HYPERCAPNIA or HYPOXIA. Cardiac arrhythmias and elevation of systemic and pulmonary arterial pressures may occur. Frequent partial arousals occur throughout sleep, resulting in relative SLEEP DEPRIVATION and daytime tiredness. Associated conditions include OBESITY; ACROMEGALY; MYXEDEMA; micrognathia; MYOTONIC DYSTROPHY; adenotonsilar dystrophy; and NEUROMUSCULAR DISEASES.
