Acetone

Description

Description of acetone with associated disease summary

Acetone is one of ketone bodies, which are synthesized in the mitochondria of hepatocytes for energy generation when glycogen storage is depleted. Ketone bodies are exhaled and excreted in the urine when levels of ketone bodies are high. In a study of EBC metabolomes in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), acetone and other metabolites are identified using high resolution 2D-NMR spectroscopy. Elevated concentrations of acetone, acetate, ethanol and 2-propanol are observed in patients with CF compared to healthy controls. Within CF patients, ethanol and 2-propanol levels are higher whereas acetate and methanol levels are lower in stable CF subjects versus unstable CF subjects. (Thorax. (2012)) The analysis of specific molecules containing acetone may provide further insights into the detection and pathophysiology of CF. Description ofdisease(s) related to Acetone:

Cystic fibrosis (CF)

Acetone level in EBC is higher in CF patients than in healthy subjects. (Thorax. (2012))

Summary of extracted biomedical information

Acetone is associated with abnormalities such as Diabetes, Diabetes Mellitus, Sweet's Syndrome, Diabetes Mellitus, Non-Insulin-Dependent and Diabetes Mellitus, Insulin-Dependent. Cystic Fibrosis MeSH: Cystic Fibrosis
An autosomal recessive genetic disease of the EXOCRINE GLANDS. It is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the CYSTIC FIBROSIS TRANSMEMBRANE CONDUCTANCE REGULATOR expressed in several organs including the LUNG, the PANCREAS, the BILIARY SYSTEM, and the SWEAT GLANDS. Cystic fibrosis is characterized by epithelial secretory dysfunction associated with ductal obstruction resulting in AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION; chronic RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS; PANCREATIC INSUFFICIENCY; maldigestion; salt depletion; and HEAT PROSTRATION. Year introduced: 1967
