Heptanal

Description

Description of Heptanal with associated disease summary

Aldehydes resulting from lipid peroxidation can be measured in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) of humans. These aldehydes could be potential biomarkers for monitoring diseases and response to therapy; heptanal is one of such aldehydes. ( Am J Respir Crit Care Med. (2003) ) Heptanal is a known breakdown product of oxidized linoleic and arachidonic, palmitoleic, and oleic acid, respectively. ( Am J Respir Crit Care Med. (2003) ) In one study, researchers compared the levels of heptanal in patients of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) with those of smoking/nonsmoking control subjects by LC-MS/MS method. The result shows heptanal level increased in the EBC of patients with COPD compared with nonsmoking control subjects (p=0.002). Heptanal level also increased in the EBC of smoking control subjects compared with nonsmoking control subjects. ( Am J Respir Crit Care Med. (2003) ) Another study reported that under optimum conditions, heptanal levels in EBC of lung cancer patients were higher than those of healthy subjects. ( J Chromatogr A. (2015)) In a third study, a MSPE-HPLC method was applied to determine the heptanal levels in EBC samples of healthy controls and lung cancer patients. Interestingly, heptanal level was found in most healthy subject's EBC, but not in lung cancer patient's EBC. ( J Chromatogr A. (2014)) These methods were proposed for quantifying aldehyde metabolites in complex biological samples. Description of disease(s) related to Heptanal:

Pulmonary Disease, Chronic Obstructive (COPD)

In one study, researchers compared the levels of heptanal in patients of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) with those of smoking/nonsmoking control subjects by LC-MS/MS method. The result shows heptanal level increased in the EBC of patients with COPD compared with nonsmoking control subjects (p=0.002) ( Am J Respir Crit Care Med. (2003) ).
