Isopropanol

Description

Description of isopropanol with associated disease summary

2-propanol is a potential marker of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis (PLCH) and Cystic fibrosis. To detect and quantify acetate, NMR method is applied. In one study about smoking-related diseases including COPD and PLCH, the concentrations of 2-propanol in COPD and PLCH patients are higher than healthy smokers (J Proteome Res. (2013)). 2-propanol can be formed from reduction of acetone by alcohol dehydrogenase in liver. However, no acetone variation were detected. (J Proteome Res. (2013)). More studies has to be performed to explain the relation between alcohols and smoking-related diseases. The 2-propanol concentration difference also observed between cystic fibrosis and healthy control using NMF detection method (Thorax. (2012)). As in COPD and PLCH patients, 2-propanol concentration in CF patients is higher than the healthy control. The increase of 2-propanol may be due to metabolism in bacteria and/or increased lipid degradation and lipid peroxidation. Description of disease(s) related to 2-propanol:

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

The concentration of EBC 2-propanol is increased in COPD patients (J Proteome Res. (2013)) . Although 2-propanol can be formed from reduction of acetone by alcohol dehydrogenase in liver, no acetone variation were detected. (J Proteome Res. (2013)). More studies has to be performed to explain the relation between alcohols and smoking-related diseases.

Pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis (PLCH)

The concentration of EBC 2-propanol is increased in PLCH patients (J Proteome Res. (2013)) . Although 2-propanol can be formed from reduction of acetone by alcohol dehydrogenase in liver, no acetone variation were detected. (J Proteome Res. (2013)). More studies has to be performed to explain the relation between alcohols and smoking-related diseases.

Disease summary

Cystic fibrosis (CF)

The concentration of EBC 2-propanol is increased in CF patients (Thorax. (2012)). The increase of 2-propanol may be due to metabolism in bacteria and/or increased lipid degradation and lipid peroxidation.

Cystic Fibrosis MeSH: Cystic Fibrosis
An autosomal recessive genetic disease of the EXOCRINE GLANDS. It is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the CYSTIC FIBROSIS TRANSMEMBRANE CONDUCTANCE REGULATOR expressed in several organs including the LUNG, the PANCREAS, the BILIARY SYSTEM, and the SWEAT GLANDS. Cystic fibrosis is characterized by epithelial secretory dysfunction associated with ductal obstruction resulting in AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION; chronic RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS; PANCREATIC INSUFFICIENCY; maldigestion; salt depletion; and HEAT PROSTRATION. Langerhans-cell granulomatosis can involve a single organ, or can be a systemic disorder. Year introduced: 1990(1975)
