5-HETE

Description

Description of 5-HETE with associated disease summary

5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE), an intermediate metabolite of arachidonic acid (AA), is generated by 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) in eicosanoid biosynthetic pathways. The level of eicosanoid in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is usually measured by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) or both. The measurement of 5-HETE in EBC helps to detect the alterations in subjects with and without asthma, and evenly, in asthmatic subjects with and without aspirin hypersensitivity. Higher levels of 5-HETE were observed in EBC and activated whole blood samples of asthmatic patients, which allowed accurate discrimination between asthmatic and healthy subjects (Glowacka, Jedynak-Wasowicz et al. 2013). A significant increase of 5-HETE level in asthmatic patients makes 5-HETE be an exhaled marker of asthmatic inflammation. Description of disease(s) related to 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE):

Asthma

The level of 5-HETE in EBC was significantly higher in asthmatic children, compared to the level in healthy children.

Asthma, Aspirin-Induced

Subjects with asthma had significant increased level of 5-HETE in EBC as compared to healthy control subjects. Before bronchial aspirin challenge on subjects with asthma, the baseline level of 5-HETE in EBC was significantly higher in aspirin-induced asthma (AIA) group than in aspirin-tolerant asthma (ATA) group. After aspirin administration, EBC level of 5-HETE had no significant change in AIA and ATA groups.
