Potassium

Description

Description of Potassium with associated disease summary

Potassium (K) is one of the most common elements in the human body. Its presence and concentration influence a wide variety of physiological functions. In a study of EBC elements in patients with Cystic fibrosis (CF). K is identified using inductively-coupled-plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). CF subjects have significantly higher concentrations of K versus healthy controls. However, K+ is not regularly detected in all samples. ( Concentration of principle compositions like K element of EBC is not just a reflection of passive transudates. This indicates that they are differentially controlled in CF subjects. Description of disease(s) related to Potassium :

Cystic fibrosis (CF)

CF patients had higher concentrations of K compared to healthy controls (J Cyst Fibros. (2003) ).

Cystic Fibrosis MeSH: Cystic Fibrosis
An autosomal recessive genetic disease of the EXOCRINE GLANDS. It is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the CYSTIC FIBROSIS TRANSMEMBRANE CONDUCTANCE REGULATOR expressed in several organs including the LUNG, the PANCREAS, the BILIARY SYSTEM, and the SWEAT GLANDS. Cystic fibrosis is characterized by epithelial secretory dysfunction associated with ductal obstruction resulting in AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION; chronic RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS; PANCREATIC INSUFFICIENCY; maldigestion; salt depletion; and HEAT PROSTRATION. Year introduced: 1967
