Nonanal

Description

Description of Nonanal with associated disease summary

Aldehydes are biomarkers of oxidant-induced damage. Nonanal is a saturated aldehyde, one of many known breakdown products of oxidized linoleic acid and arachidonic acid, palmitoleic acid, and oleic. Aldehydes are detectable in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) of children. One study with asthma children vs. control subjects find that nonanal levels are modified during asthma exacerbation and after a 5-day course of therapy with oral prednisone. Nonanal levels were higher in control subjects than in asthma subjects. This led to the speculation of whether this is a result of different membrane cell lipid targets of the reactive oxygen species or different composition in membrane cell phospholipids in lung diseases. Further studies are warranted. ( Am J Respir Crit Care Med. (2003) ) An applied MSPE-HPLC method for successful determination of aldehydes metabolites in EBC was proposed, and tested in EBC samples of healthy controls and lung cancer patients. Under optimal conditions, the peak for nonanal was identified. The nonanal levels in EBC of lung cancer patients were higher than those of healthy controls. This proposed method is an alternative approach for quantifying aldehyde metabolites in complex biological samples ( J Chromatogr A. (2014) ). Description of disease(s) related to Nonanal:
