Pentanal

Description

Description of pentanal with associated disease summary

Pentanal is an alkyl aldehyde. The potential diagnostic value for lung cancer make pentanal and other aldehyde become desirable test analytes (J Chromatogr A. (2015)). To extract this compound and other aldehydes, magnetic solid-phase extraction combined with HPLC (MSPE-HPLC) and in-tube solid phase microextraction (IT-SPME) were developed. These two method can achieve both low detection limit and desirable linearity (J Chromatogr A. (2014), J Chromatogr A. (2015)). In these two studies, calibration curves of pentanal and other 5 aldehydes including butanal, hexanal heptanal, octanal and nonanal were evaluated and used to quantified the concentrations between healthy controls and lung cancer patients. In the first study, the concentration levels of pentanal and nonanal in lung cancer patients is higher than healthy control. However, in the second study, the level of concentration of pentanal in lung cancer patints do not significantly different to healthy controls (J Chromatogr A. (2015)). More additional study is necessary to be performed to take other conditions into consideration including diets habit, sex, and smoking (J Chromatogr A. (2014)). Description of disease(s) related to pentanal:

Disease summary

Lung Neoplasms

The concentration levels of pentanal in lung cancer patients are higher than the healthy control using MSPE-HPLC extraction method (J Chromatogr A. (2014)). However, the more recent studies using IT-SPME method do not support the previous statement. Instead, other five aldehydes including butanal, hexanal heptanal, octanal and nonanal shows the higher level of concentration in lung cancer patients. More additional study is necessary to be performed to find the specified aldehyde biomarker in lung cancer patients.
