Sodium (Na) is one of the most common elements in the human body. Its presence and concentration influence a wide variety of physiological functions. In a study of EBC elements in patients with Cystic fibrosis (CF). Na is identified using inductively-coupled-plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). CF subjects have higher concentrations of Na versus healthy controls. However, this trend is not significant (P = 0.1112). ( J Cyst Fibros. (2003) ) Concentration of principle compositions like Na element of EBC is not just a reflection of passive transudates. This indicates that they are differentially controlled in CF subjects.
