Prostaglandin E2

Description

Description of Prostaglandin E2 with associated disease summary

Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is a compound with potent anti-inflammatory activity and it can relax airway smooth muscles ( Arch Med Sci. (2012)). It can be detected using enzyme immunoassay (EIA) method. If PGE2-braking mechanism is failed or inhibited by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), the cysteinyl-leukotrienes (cys-LTs) will increase. The EBC PGE2 in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis (CF) patients increased compared with healthy control (Arch Med Sci. (2012), Free Radic Biol Med. (2008)). Description of disease(s) related to Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2):

Disease summary

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

The EBC PGE2 concentrations in COPD patients increased compared with healthy control (Arch Med Sci. (2012)).

Cystic fibrosis (CF)

The EBC PGE2 concentrations in CF patients increased compared with healthy control (Free Radic Biol Med. (2008)).

Cystic Fibrosis MeSH: Cystic Fibrosis
An autosomal recessive genetic disease of the EXOCRINE GLANDS. It is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the CYSTIC FIBROSIS TRANSMEMBRANE CONDUCTANCE REGULATOR expressed in several organs including the LUNG, the PANCREAS, the BILIARY SYSTEM, and the SWEAT GLANDS. Cystic fibrosis is characterized by epithelial secretory dysfunction associated with ductal obstruction resulting in AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION; chronic RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS; PANCREATIC INSUFFICIENCY; maldigestion; salt depletion; and HEAT PROSTRATION.
