Description of 4-Hydroxynonenal with associated disease summary

4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) is a known oxidative stress biomarker. They are formed endogenously by lipid peroxidation in situ and released into the extracellular space. EBC 4-HNE levels were reported to be increased in patients with occupational lung diseases. Long-term exposure to silicosis or asbestos dust induce a generation of reactive oxygen species including 4-HNE in the lung. In this study, quantification of EBC 4-HNE was achieved by a solid-phase extraction (SPE), followed by a LC-ESI-MS/MS detection with the selected reaction monitoring (SRM) mode. ( Chromatogr B.(2009) ) EBC 4-HNE detection was found to be a promising non-invasive tool for the evaluation of activity of both silica and asbestos-induced diseases. This may expands diagnostic potential to oxidative stress inducing occupational lung diseases. Description of disease(s) related to 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE):
