Description of disease(s) related to Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA): The role of oxidative stress in inflammatory lung diseases has been examined in numerous studies. Endogenous nitric oxide (NO) plays an important part in the physiological regulation of airway functions; recent studies suggested that: asthma may be a condition of decreased NO bioavailability, rather than overproduction as a result of inflammation. NO generation is a process competitively inhibited by the arginine analogues, such as symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA). It was suggested that SDMA perhaps contribute to a reduction in intracellular substrate availability. This study measured SDMA in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) samples of 19 healthy adolescents and 14 asthmatic adolescents. The result shows SDMA concentration significantly increased in asthmatic adolescents compared to normal controls. It was proposed that SDMA ratios to tyrosine determined in EBC, could be more representative biomarkers of oxidative stress in lung inflammation. Current study confirms that SDMA increased in asthma, as demonstrated by Scott et al. (Am. J. Respir. Crit. Care Med. (2011)) in lungs from asthmatic subjects and in the murine model of allergic airways inflammation ( Anal Chim Acta. (2012) ).
